Dr. Steph on microneedling

How it works

Collagen induction therapy, beneath the surface

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger your body’s natural healing response. As the skin repairs itself, it produces collagen and elastin, the proteins that help maintain firmness and elasticity. This renewal gradually improves the appearance of fine lines, scars and uneven texture.

Dr. Pen: treatment tailored to your skin

We use Dr. Pen to deliver precise microneedling, adjusting the needle depth to each treatment area, your skin and the concerns we’re addressing. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand to help keep you comfortable.

  • Your own collagen renewal — your skin’s healing response builds the result.
  • Personalised needle depth — treatment is adjusted to your individual needs.
  • Serum or PRF options — selected serums or platelet-rich fibrin may be paired with treatment where appropriate.

Improvement continues after your appointment

Initial recovery and collagen renewal happen on different timelines. While redness and sensitivity settle, the deeper rebuilding process continues. Improvements may appear within weeks, with fuller results developing over several months. Sessions are spaced to allow recovery, and your treatment plan is reviewed according to your skin’s response.

What it treats

Acne scars & uneven texture

Microneedling stimulates collagen renewal to help soften the appearance of acne scars and smooth uneven texture. Improvement builds gradually over a series of treatments, with the approach tailored to your scar type and skin.

Fine lines & firmness

By encouraging collagen and elastin production, microneedling can soften fine lines and improve the appearance of mild skin laxity for smoother, firmer-looking skin.

Neck lines & crepey skin

Microneedling can help improve fine lines and crepey texture on the neck. Needle depth is adjusted to this delicate area, with the treatment plan based on your skin and concerns.

Enlarged pores & uneven tone

Treatment can reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and improve uneven skin tone and texture. Where pigmentation is a concern, we assess its cause before recommending microneedling or a combined approach.

Stretch marks

Microneedling may soften the appearance of stretch marks by stimulating collagen in the affected skin. Results vary with their age and severity, and a series of sessions may be needed.

Optional add-ons

Why add a serum or PRF?

Microneedling stimulates collagen renewal. A selected serum or PRF can complement your treatment by targeting additional skin needs, such as hydration, repair or overall skin quality. We recommend an option according to your concerns and suitability.

  • LumEnvy (PDRN) — PDRN, short for polydeoxyribonucleotide, contains DNA fragments commonly derived from salmon or trout. We offer it as a professional topical serum alongside your Dr. Pen treatment. It is studied for supporting skin repair and renewal, with potential improvements in texture and fine lines; benefits vary by formulation and application method.
  • Rejuran (polynucleotides) — often called “salmon DNA” and popularised in Korean aesthetics, polynucleotides are available as a professional topical serum applied during or after your Dr. Pen treatment. They are studied for supporting hydration, elasticity and smoother skin texture, although benefits vary by formulation and application method.
  • PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) — prepared from a small sample of your own blood, PRF contains platelets, fibrin and growth factors involved in tissue repair. It may be paired with microneedling to support the skin’s healing response, with the aim of gradually improving texture and overall skin quality.

Aftercare

The first few days

Your skin may look red or temporarily darker and feel warm, tight or sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn. Mild swelling, dryness or flaking can also occur. Recovery varies with treatment depth, with these effects usually settling within a few days to a week.

  • Use the gentle cleanser and moisturiser recommended by your clinician.
  • Wait at least 24 hours before applying makeup, or longer if advised.
  • Check with our team before resuming your usual skincare products, especially retinoids, exfoliating acids and scrubs.
  • Don’t pick, scratch or peel flaking skin.
  • Follow your clinician’s guidance on returning to exercise, swimming, saunas and steam rooms.

Protect your skin

Avoid direct sun exposure while your skin recovers. Use shade and a hat, and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher once your clinician advises it is appropriate. Keep daily sun protection part of your routine.

Check with our team before scheduling facials, peels, laser or other skin treatments.

When to contact us

Contact our team if redness, swelling or pain worsens rather than improves, or if you develop blisters, discharge or a persistent rash. Seek prompt medical advice for fever or spreading redness.

Sessions & results

How many sessions you’ll need

A series of 3–6 sessions, usually spaced 4–6 weeks apart, may be recommended depending on your skin and goals. Minor concerns may need fewer treatments, while deeper acne scarring may require a longer plan. We review your response as treatment progresses.

How long a session takes

Allow around an hour for your appointment, including topical numbing and treatment. The time needed depends on the areas treated and any selected add-ons.

When results appear

Your skin begins its repair process after treatment, but visible results develop gradually. You may notice improvements within a few weeks, with fuller results developing over several months as collagen rebuilds.

Maintaining your results

Maintenance sessions may be recommended every 6–12 months, depending on your skin and response. Daily sun protection and a suitable skincare routine help maintain your results. Any complementary treatments are planned around your recovery.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Does microneedling hurt?

We apply topical numbing cream before treatment to help keep you comfortable. You may still feel pressure, vibration or a scratching sensation, particularly in more sensitive areas.

Is microneedling suitable for darker skin tones?

Microneedling can be suitable for all skin tones. We assess your skin, pigmentation history and healing response to tailor treatment and reduce the risk of unwanted colour changes.

Can I have microneedling if I have active acne?

We generally wait until inflamed, painful or infected breakouts have settled before treating the affected area. Microneedling can help improve acne scars, but active acne may need a separate treatment plan first.

How is it different from RF microneedling?

Standard microneedling uses fine needles to stimulate the skin’s healing response. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy to deliver heat beneath the surface. We’ll recommend an approach according to your concerns and suitability.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Avoid tanning and sunburn, and check with our team about which skincare products to pause beforehand. Tell us about medications, recent skin treatments and any history of cold sores. Don’t stop prescribed medication without medical advice.

Is microneedling suitable for everyone?

Suitability depends on your skin and medical history. Active skin infections, poor wound healing, a tendency to develop keloid scars and certain conditions or medications may make treatment unsuitable. We assess these at consultation.

Bring your concern, not a treatment name.

Whether it’s acne scars, uneven texture or fine lines, tell us what you’d like to address. We’ll assess your skin and help you decide whether microneedling suits your goals.
